The Reel World: Small-Label Celtic and English Music
by Tom Nelligan
While we’re on the subject of duos, 5 Mile Chase is the name used by Minnesota fiddler/bouzouki player Django Amerson and guitar, flute, and whistle player Brian Miller. Their eponymous debut CD [self-produced (2003)] contains a variety of fiddle based tune sets, mostly Irish-style reels that the duo learned from playing in sessions across the country. Amerson and Miller are both technically able musicians who capture the spirit of a spontaneous pub session in their straightforward arrangements. The disc features a couple of songs including a heartfelt cover of Richard Thompson’s “Waltzing’s for Dreamers,” which leads, of course, into a sad little waltz.
